WorldSSP FP1: Krummenacher Dominates

WorldSSP FP1 Strip

Swiss rider Randy Krummenacher has set the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit alight this afternoon in opening practice for round one of the 2019 Supersport World Championship.

Krummenacher’s best lap of 1min32.777secs in the 45-minunte session – red-flagged twice after some local wildlife strayed onto the circuit – was nearly half a second faster than fellow Yamaha rider Thomas Gradinger, and just shy of the best ever WorldSSP lap at Phillip Island – 1:32.545 set by Sam Lowes way back in 2013.

Krummenacher’s teammate Federico Caricasulo was third in FP1, from Raffaele De Rosa (MV Agusta), Frenchman Jules Cluzel (Yamaha) and 2018 Phillip Island winner Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki).

Injured Aussie wildcard Tom Toparis (Yamaha) was ultra-impressive in 14th position, just 1.881secs behind Krummenacher. Toparis, who was 15th in the 2018 WorldSSP race at Phillip Island, crashed in final pre-season testing three days ago and suffered some nasty burns.

FP2 is at 4:00pm this afternoon.
