Bitter Sweet for Olly at Donnington

Between rounds of the Red Bull Rookies Cup, Olly Simpson took the opportunity last weekend to race in the British Superbikes at Donnington Park, England.

The first free practice session was on Friday where Olly had 30 minutes to learn the track and learn new Ohlins suspension system that they had fitted to the bike specifically for that weekend. The session provided Olly with the chance to familiarize himself with the track and the new suspension set up.  After a few adjustments Olly finished 4th but still felt there was room for improvement.

“The second free practice I spent setting up the bike because it still wasn’t right from the first practice but I made progress with the bike setup and was in 4th position again”

said Olly

The schedule included two races for the weekend due to a rain out in the last round of the British Superbikes.  Olly was allowed to start the race but at the back of the field in 22nd position because he was not at the meeting that was rained out and did not qualify.  The race was shortened to 10 laps but Olly still managed to work his way through the field to finish a very impressive 3rd.

Olly then had to qualifying for the race on Sunday.

“I had 30 minutes to set a quick time and even though we did not have the bike set up very good with the new suspension I got the third quickest time so for the race on Sunday I could start from 3rd on the grid”

explained Olly

After the Sunday warm up session Olly was still trying different setups on the bike but on second lap of the warm up he crashed but was still able to post the second fastest time.  After a quick scramble to repair the bike, Olly was ready for race start.

“We started off well in the first lap and I was in the front group for first laps and was still having trouble with the bike. On lap 3, I crashed out of the race”

Lamented Olly

Olly now heads to Misano, Italy for the next round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup with his spirits high after the exciting news that he has been selected for a Moto3 wild card entry into the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island October 17-19.
