A Tough Weekend At Assen For Olly

The second round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup for the 2015 season saw Olly Simpson dislocated his shoulder in tough battle. Unfortunately forcing the Aussie young gun to leave the Assen circuit without adding anymore points to the championship.

The weekend started on Thursday with two practices and qualifying at the prestigious Assen TT circuit better known as the cathedral of speed. Olly was eager to get out onto the track as he enjoys this circuit.

Olly was able to get the 6th fastest time in the first practice session, getting used to the bike and track again. He was then able to change some settings on the bike for practice 2 and continued to make changes throughout the session which kept improving the bike allowing him to get the 4th quickest time.

After a short break, Olly was able to heat up the track in the qualifying session, finding some really good pace and qualifying alone with no slipstream. He qualified 2nd on the grid, making it a great start to the weekend.

Friday started with Race 1. Olly felt very confident leading into the race and he was excited to get out there.

The race started after all of the other categories had finished their qualifying. The 16 lap race saw Olly started very strongly, getting the holeshot and took the lead straight away leading for the lap. He was in a good battle straight away in the first 4 laps until coming out of turn 4, the tightest corner on the track. He made a small mistake trying to defend whilst attacking coming out of the corner getting on the accelerator to aggressively and highsided. The force of the crash dislocated his shoulder so he could not re-join the race or compete in race 2 either. This was unfortunate for him as he looked so strong for two good results on the podium.

Olly is now working hard to recover and get his shoulder back up to 100% strength ready for the third round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in Sachsenring in two weekend’s time. He loves this track a lot and should be completely fit for some strong results in Sachsenring.
